Movies ‘Till Dawn: Your Early Morning Programming

Midnight Kiss Me, Kill Me – Crime Drama
61UfIix8seL._SL1000_(1976, Sony Choice Collection) Intended as a series pilot, this ABC Movie of the Week stars Stella Stevens as an investigator for the L.A. district attorney’s office whose latest case – the murder of disabled schoolteacher Tisha Sterling – uncovers some salacious truths about both the victim and her large coterie of admirers. The script, by Oscar nominee Robert E. Thompson (They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?) hews along standard issue cop/mystery lines, but injects an element of tawdry sex (all obliquely referenced, per network Standards and Practices) into the proceedings, most notably about Sterling’s proclivity for aggressive bedroom play and sniggering hints about chief suspect Robert Vaughn’s hush-hush dalliance with bisexual hustler Bruce Boxleitner (!). Depending on your tastes and tolerance, the subtext will either enhance or detract from the picture’s main appeal: as ‘70s-style crime story comfort food for midnight-to-dawn TV habitués. But the latter is strongly reinforced by straight-faced, no-nonsense turns from a supporting cast of familiar faces, including Dabney Coleman, Pat O’Brien and Claude Akins, and a few offbeat ringers like Bruce (father of Crispin) Glover and Steve Franken of Dobie Gillis fame. Not to be confused with Kiss Me Kill Me (1973), an American retitling for Baba Yaga, a hallucinatory live-action adaptation of the Guido Crepax comic.

1:30 a.m. Search  – “The Murrow Disappearance,” Action
(1972-1973, Warner Archives) Debut episode for this rarely seen espionage series from 71T494OjidL._SL1000_ Leslie Stevens (The Outer Limits) and Robert Justman (Star Trek: The Original Series) has suave superspy Hugh O’Brien on the trail of a missing State Department official, aided by irascible scientist Burgess Meredith and his team, who followed O’Brien’s progress with an array of gadgets synced up to his vitals. The show’s entertaining premise, which alternated O’Brien as leading man with Tony Franciosa and Doug McClure, is somewhat undone by the leaden “racy” dialogue – O’Brien’s aging predatory stud veneer plays more icky than cool, and there’s an uncomfortable notion that team member Angel Tompkins has earned top clearance by sleeping with her (elderly) boss – but as small-screen action goes, Search holds attention with its fascination for spy high tech. Warner Archives’ six-disc set complies the show’s complete brief network run. With: Maurice Evans, Capucine, David (Bewitched) White.
2 a.m The Beasts are on the Streets – Action/Thriller
(1978, Warner Archives) This live-action TV feature from Hanna-Barbera Productions takes its cues from the nature-gone-berserk movie cycle of the 1970s (see also Food of the Gods, Day of the Animals) by unleashing a horde of lions, elephants and bears from a Texas nature park upon the citizens of a nearby town. Carol Lynley (The Poseidon Adventure) is top-billed as a concerned veterinarian, but she’s saddled with the breech birth of an enormous camel for the majority of the picture, leaving most of the tranquilizing and recapturing action to sort-of boyfriend Dale Robinette (now an award-winning still photographer). Directed by Peter R. Hunt, who served as editor on many of the early James Bond titles, Beasts can’t deliver the real red meat of animal-on-human action, but settles instead for a number of highly disturbing scenes involving real animals in what appear to be genuine brawls (bear vs. tiger) or actual harm’s way (an obviously terrified lion surrounded by a ring of fire). These mondo moments land with an ugly thud next to scenes of wan romance or drama and bring a whiff of sleazoid vibes to an otherwise amiable and occasionally goofy effort. Also starring a fresh-faced Philip Michael Thomas (Miami Vice), Billy Green Bush (Five Easy Pieces) as a trigger-happy hunter, the venerable Anna Lee (How Green Was My Valley, General Hospital), the voice of prolific HB performer John Stephenson and burly Bill Thurman, a veteran Texas player featured in everything from The Sugarland Express to Mars Needs Women, as the tanker truck driver whose pep pill-fueled blackout frees the park animals. Hanna-Barbera’s live action division also oversaw KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park.
4 a.m. Monsters – “The Feverman,” Horror
(1988-1991, E1/CBS Home Video) David McCallum (NCIS) is top-billed as a dissolute faith healer charged with saving a dying young girl in this premier episode of this syndicated anthology series from Richard P. Rubinstein (Tales from the Darkside). To the surprise of the girl’s father and his doubting doctor friend, McCallum’s treatment not only draws out the fever, but gives it a loathsome, corpulent form – all the better to wrestle into remission. A solid opener for this late-night series, which featured an impressive pedigree of writers (Robert Bloch, Gahan Wilson, Michael McDowell) and directors (Allen Coulter, Debra Hill), as well as an offbeat array of actors (Troy Donahue, Meat Loaf, Abe Vigoda, Morton Downey, Jr.) that did much to camouflage the show’s budgetary shortcomings. The nine-disc E1/CBS box set includes all 72 episodes.
4:30 a.m. Cinerama Holiday – Travelogue
91OOIeQt+zL._SL1500_(1955, Flicker Alley) One of the earliest presentations of the sprawling Cinerama format – in which a single film was shown on a massive screen with three synchronized projects – Cinerama Holiday is a breezy postcard from a time gone by, when many of the world’s most impressive sights of the world remained unseen by the general public. The premise – a camera crew follows a couple from Kansas City as they visit France and Switzerland while also trailing a Swiss couple on their travels through America – gives way to a sweetly naïve tour of grand and decidedly plain places and things in both countries, from county fairs and ice dancing to bobsled riding and New Orleans funerals. Each event is elevated to spectacle status by the staggering Cinerama format, which is expertly reproduced by Flicker Alley’s “Smilebox” technology.  The Blu-ray/DVD presentation includes numerous extras, including a “breakdown” reel designed to keep audiences entertained in case the Cinerama projectors failed to work, new interviews with and photograph and home movie collections by the participating couples, and a terrific reproduction of the 28-page program given to patrons at the original roadshow presentations, complete with a recipe for Swiss cheese fondue.

Invictus (2009)

Director: Clint Eastwood
Invictus%203.jpg
By Marilyn Ferdinand
Movie makers, working in the collective dream factory, are in the mythology business. Familiar stories are told and retold in the best tradition of earlier oral historians and folklorists. And like the hero myths of the classical world and before, a modern hero occasionally emerges whose feats are counted and recounted in songs, stories, and, in our modern way, movies. In an earlier time, biopics about presidents like Lincoln and soldiers like Sergeant York dominated the hero narrative. In more recent years, modern, nonwhite heroes like Gandhi, Malcolm X, Biko, and Ali have taken center stage.
Invictus%209.jpg
Now Clint Eastwood, a man deeply interested in chronicling the myths and mores of manhood, has made his trek across violence and its failures to the shores of Nelson Mandela’s rainbow renaissance in racially divided South Africa. Invictus tells the true story of the early days of Mandela’s presidency and how he inspired national unity by throwing his support behind a potent symbol of white supremacy, the national rugby team, the Springboks, in their bid for the 1995 World Cup in their first year of eligibility following the lifting of sanctions against the country. Eastwood’s effort is both more than it appears and less that it has already been hailed—an epic in the grand tradition of the ancient bards and a story of inspiration that denies the whole truth of the story its smart script tells in a deceptively “accurate” fashion.
Invictus%207.jpg
The time is 1994. The film gives us the lay of the land and then takes us to a rugby field. Young white teens are playing on a groomed and neatly fenced field, uniformed, coached, and drilling with precision. Across the street behind a battered chain-link fence, black boys in tattered clothes kick around a soccer ball. When a motorcade on the road that separates them approaches, all run to their respective fences. The black boys wave and cheer as the newly elected Nelson Mandela (Eastwood regular Morgan Freeman) parades modestly on his way to his new home in the national capital of Pretoria. On the other side of the road, a coach tells his charges to remember this day as one when “our country went to the dogs.” In this simply explanatory scene, the racial schism in South Africa is economically sketched. The rest of the film concerns how Mandela will stitch it into whole cloth.
Mandela, seeing half the presidential staff packing or already gone, calls those still in the building together. He tells them there will be no repercussions for their past associations and actions, and asks them in his humble, gracious manner to stay and serve their country at this difficult time. Smiles appear on their white faces. Large frowns appear on the faces of his black security force when he sends in white security guards—enforcers that likely tortured and killed many blacks in the bad old days—to work alongside them. “How can we trust them?” one guard asks head of security Jason Tshabalala (Tony Kgoroge). “It is what Madiba wishes,” he answers with dismay. “What did you call him?” a white guard (Langley Kirkwood) asks. “Madiba. That’s what WE call him.” “We’ll call him Mr. President,” is the white guard’s chilly response.
invictus_27.jpg
Mandela attends a Springboks game against England. He notes to his private secretary Brenda (Adjoa Andoh) that the whites cheer the Springboks and the blacks cheer England. He did the same when he was imprisoned on Robben Island to annoy the guards. To black South Africans, the Springboks are a hated symbol, but by observing his enemy while incarcerated for 27 years, he learned how much this team means to his white jailors and the rest of white South Africa. He stops an attempt by an all-black South African athletic authority to ban the name and colors of the Springboks and decides, against advice, to stand firmly behind the team in their bid for the World Cup championship. He invites the Afrikaner team captain Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) to meet with him, thanking Pienaar profusely for sparing some of his precious time to come to see him. When Pienaar comes out of the meeting to meet his wife Nerine (Marguerite Wheatley), who has been waiting in the car, she asks him what Mandela wanted. “I think he wants us to win the World Cup.” Indeed he does.
Invictus%202.jpg
From this point, the film develops as a straightforward, feel-good, sports drama. The black and white security guards play rugby together in the presidential compound, Mandela checks his watch while meeting diplomats to see if he’ll be done by game time, the Springboks go from hapless losers to a mighty Cinderella team. Finally, the entire nation shuts down to watch the World Cup finals against New Zealand, white cops outside Jo’burg’s Ellis Park Stadium, where the game is being played, dancing joyfully with a black boy who has stopped to listen to the neck-and-neck match on their car radio. When the closing credits juxtapose Morgan Freeman in his Springboks jersey and hat with a photo of the real Nelson Mandela in the same outfit, the convergence of myth and reality is complete.
invictus_30.jpg
At its heart, Invictus is a story about self-determination, a subject that resonates through Eastwood’s career, from Dirty Harry asking various criminals “You’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky?” to Bronco Billy’s answer to Miss Lilly’s question about whether he’s for real, “I’m who I want to be,” to Maggie Fitzgerald being given the right to choose to live or die in Million Dollar Baby. A voiceover by Freeman reciting the last lines of William Ernest Henley’s poem “Invictus” (“I am the master of my fate/I am the captain of my soul”) recurs at various points, and Eastwood shoots a scene of Mandela writing the poem out for Pienaar to inspire him and his team to greatness. Mandela believes in the intangible—the power of forgiveness, inspirational words, even the powerful “juju” of the Maori war chant the Springboks’ opponents perform before the opening scrum. Ultimately, his belief in the right of all South Africans to determine their own future—rejecting the theory of separate racial destinies of the apartheidists—is what steeled him to his life’s hard work.
Invictus%204.jpg
Since this is a hero’s journey, that which is tangential to the central character’s project gets little more than a quick scrawl. Each character exists to be won over by Mandela’s personal magnetism and the power of the intangible; a scene in which Mandela asks to be quizzed on the names of the team members shows his careful preparation for making people he doesn’t know feel special. Women are helpmates and objects with whom Mandela can flirt. Mandela’s wife Winnie accompanies him out of prison and then is banished from the film; his daughter Zindzi (Bonnie Henna) is introduced as an embittered woman who avoids her father only to be shown to have been won over by his Springboks strategy, cheering the final match on TV. Strange in a film so dedicated to self-determination to have so many people reduced to cardboard cutouts. One of my colleagues calls it Brechtian distancing. I think he is right; it certainly prevented me from feeling emotionally engaged in the final rugby match, which visually was kind of a mess of grunts, smashing bones, and bruising.
invictus_14.jpg
It is also cheat. Brecht used his epic approach to force people to identify with the social milieu of his story, not the characters. Eastwood has decided we need to come together, right now, and it’s hard not to see some parallels with Obama’s good ship Hope. Sadly, Obama and his handlers understood the marketing that helped Mandela charm the masses, but do not seem strong or dedicated enough to push for substance. The reality in South Africa, that Mandela also had to work with the white minority that owned and ran the country, and that the country is still reeling from decades of apartheid economics and social oppression, is not really allowed to register. Maybe we all do need a booster shot of hope, but being real is more than saying what we want to be. We have to be it.

Taking Woodstock (2009)

Director: Ang Lee
Woodstock%206.jpg
By Roderick Heath
Ang Lee’s Cannes-selected comic epic was savaged upon release for replicating plentiful clichés of the hippie era. Whilst I can’t really argue with the fact that it does revel in a kind of theme-park aesthetic of ’60s anarchy whilst soft-pedaling the social friction, antiwar protests, and mood of mild terror that always defined the counterculture era, Lee’s film was, I feel, much mistreated and its finer elements ignored. I’m not sure if 2009 produced a movie both as enjoyable and as cinematically loquacious as Taking Woodstock. It possesses, moreover, a celebratory warmth that I’ve so badly missed from Lee’s breakthrough film of 1992, The Wedding Banquet, with which it shares many crucial characteristics. Lee’s intervening films, like The Ice Storm (1997) and Brokeback Mountain, and even his fine but curiously po-faced tribute to wu xia, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2001), often felt like the work of trying to play the grown-up a touch too studiously. His impressive 2006 film Lust, Caution was both highly uneven and deeply moving, and its unchecked aggression suggested a release and new direction for Lee.
Woodstock%207.jpg
Taking Woodstock is, first and foremost, a comedy spun from a memoir by Eliot Tiber, who attended the fabled festival. Eliot and his hard-bitten Russian-Jewish parents Jake and Sonia Teichberg (Henry Goodman and Imelda Staunton) run a crummy, barely surviving motel. Eliot, a failing interior decorator who’s been ripped off by his former (probably mafia) employees, has been sinking most of his money into keeping the motel afloat. He’s also gotten himself made president of the local chamber of commerce, which allows him to sign off on his own small cultural festivals to try to increase traffic to the locale.
Woodstock%208.JPG
He gets a brainwave when he reads about the proposed music festival being kicked out of Woodstock proper and another nearby town. He calls up the supernaturally laidback festival organiser Michael Lang (Jonathan Groff) and offers Lang the use of his own festival permit. Lang and his cohort of moneymen, corporate hangers-on, and suited lawyers immediately fly in by helicopter. They reject Eliot’s first proposal—to set up in the swamp behind the motel—but soon he hits on a perfect location: the dairy farm of his local acquaintance Max Yasgur (Eugene Levy). In compensation, the festival organisers make the motel their base of operations, a move that makes the Teichbergs not only immediately solvent, but actually quite rich.
Woodstock%201.jpg
As well as saving his family from economic ruin, the subsequent explosion of freak power and communal effort helps Eliot overcome his inability to express his homosexuality to the world, and reveals telling details about his own character and those of his parents that both draw them closer and then push them apart. Around them swirls a gallery of types, like Eliot’s boyhood friend Billy (Emile Hirsch) who’s recovering from his hitch in ’Nam; Lang’s philosophical girlfriend Carol (Christina Kirk); Reverend Don (Richard Thomas), a hip priest handling the festival’s community outreach; Paul (Darren Pettie), a hunky builder whose knowledge of Judy Garland hints at hidden passions; an out-and-proud, pistol-packing, ex-marine Muscle Mary called Vilma (Liev Schreiber), who becomes the Teichbergs’ guardian angel after some goodfellas come knocking; and the two beatific hippies (Paul Dano and Kelli Garner) who guide Eliot on his first acid trip. Although he toys with pat exemplars, James Schamus’ script manages to delineate them all with intelligent eccentricity, aided by the actors, noting with some smartness the process of the outsiders of the world inverting the importance of things for a brief window in time, everyone from the full-on fairies to laidback dairy farmers who have never gotten along with their waspish neighbours determined to realise a moment of pure joy.
Woodstock%209.JPG
And, indeed, Taking Woodstock manages to conjure a rare sense of communal celebration. If Groff’s Lang seems a touch more saintly than the faintly asocial, willfully oblivious creature glimpsed in Michael Wadleigh’s documentary Woodstock, Eugene Levy’s sharply inhabited Yasgur reveals a man both idealistic in nature and firmly pragmatic in wit. It’s pretty hard not to laugh at the more obvious humour, as when the Teichbergs chase off two wiseguys to the hoots and cheers of the hippies and their son’s congratulations: “Dad, Mom, you’re superheroes!” Then there’s the Earthlight Players, who live, or more accurately, are corralled in the barn by the Teichbergs, yearning for food; when the time comes for them to perform at one of Reverend Don’s outreach gigs, they strip down and berate a local audience, inspiring Billy to gleefully join them. Lee recreates the sights and sounds with such fidelity he can seamlessly integrate shots from Wadleigh’s Woodstock and what’s what can scarcely be discerned.
Woodstock%204.jpg
The feel for time and place is exact—the hairy DIY aesthetic of it all backed up by wads of mysteriously plentiful cash, the feeling of energy welling from the organisers and the people who flock to make the scene. An epic tracking shot, following Eliot riding with a motorcycle cop through the great hippie exodus, is both an effective restaging of an iconic moment and a tribute by way of rebuke to the similarly anarchic, but apocalyptic traffic jam of Godard’s Week-End: the world set in chaos can be beautiful, Lee’s vision affirms. Later, when Eliot, doped to the gills on LSD, wanders the fringes of the festival, the sea of people transforming into a vortex of energy in a brilliantly executed visual orgasm. Lee avoids making too much of the on-stage malarkey that was the focus of Wadleigh’s film, with its worshipful visions of seraphim rock stars (Eliot never gets to actually see the concert), and even disdains leaning too much on the familiar soundtrack of the period. The most crucial song in the film is one by Love, the best American band of the era not to play at Woodstock, which is played by the hippie couple in their van as they trip.

Perhaps the best quality of Lee’s film is the way it tries to elucidate with some genuine feeling the animating idea of the counterculture, that aspect well summarised by ’s Guido Anselmi as the desire to cut away “what is dead in ourselves,” as well as exploring the limitations of such curatives. It’s most obviously portrayed in Billy’s shaking off the terrors of his Vietnam tour by recalling that the festival is taking place on the very hill where he celebrated a momentous football victory in high school and joining with Eliot in mud-sliding. But the theme is most interestingly portrayed in terms of the disconnect between Eliot’s roots and family and the new life sprouting around him and beckoning to him where Taking Woodstock is most substantial.
Woodstock.JPG
The ghosts of Old World persecution and the grind of surviving a drab existence still linger, not to be entirely dispelled from the heart even when fate presents wonders. When Vilma serves the Teichbergs some hash brownies, they dance in giddy ecstasy. It’s a cliché, but one with an interesting pay-off: Eliot finds the next morning that in a druggy stupor, his mother has uncovered her savings, which she has neurotically squirreled away over the years whilst allowing her business to decay. Here the film notes with fascinating incision and lack of sentiment the potential for rebirth and also the limitations of personality to transcend its defining anxieties, as Mrs Teichberg is motivated by a very real fear and paranoia that lurks behind her amusingly gruff shtetl manners. Even when she’s made to act as broad as the Mississippi (“No schtupping in the bushes!”), Staunton still deserves a lot of admiration for the bodily force and conviction with which she inhabits the part.
Woodstock%202.jpg
Balancing this half of the family dynamic is a burgeoning father-son relationship, mediated through a coming-out on both men’s part—one sexual, the other emotional—that clearly evokes the conclusion of The Wedding Banquet. TV comic Martin is good, if unremarkable, in his role, and Goodman is quite marvelous as the wearied patriarch who finds himself one of the freaks and loves it, discovering a perfect pal in Vilma and congratulating his son on restoring his sense of life. Taking Woodstock’s generally amusing, but still pointed view of reactionary protests that fail to keep a lid on the event actually says something of contemporary relevance, particularly in stressing gay liberation as a major aspect of the scene. There’s a particularly delightful moment when Eliot is bewilderedly beset by lusty hippie chicks, and then gathered up in a full-blooded smooch by Paul, to their roars of delight in a moment of collapsing barriers.
Lee reminds us that the resentful, narrowing outlook of the Moral Majority was based chiefly in an offended sense of entitlement to dominance of discourse. Taking Woodstock makes an effective reminder that no matter what its multifarious modern mutations, the ideals of personal liberation and alt-culture resistance still have their roots firmly planted in this era. Although Lee’s style is still cool and balanced, it hasn’t been anything like this much fun to watch one of his films since Sense and Sensibility, and even if it’s no earth-shaking work of originality, it is a scene worth making. And scenes worth making don’t hit movie screens so often. l
